Sparmaking with Clint Chase
April 18-20th, 2024 ~ $675
Location: Chase Small Craft | 959 Portland Rd | Saco, ME
In this 3-day class, we will discuss, design, and build spars of two primary types: solid, laminated construction and birdsmouth construction. We will discuss spar theory, wood materials, and study plans for existing boats as well as design a spar together for a student’s boat. Students will make their own spar in the shop, from milling the wood, to ripping, glue-up, shaping, and sanding. Students will make a sample birdsmouth mast in the shop.
Class meets at 8:30 am each morning and goes until about 4pm, plenty of time to get dusty and get over to the water park across the street with the family or down to the beach, only a couple miles away.
Take home spar gauge, a semi-finished spar for sanding and sealing and new skills and knowledge to apply to this very important part of our boats: the spars that link us to the wind and help propel us through the water.
